Allianz Asia Holding Pte Ltd has agreed to acquire HSBC Life Singapore Pte Ltd, HSBC's life and health insurance business in Singapore, for SGD 2.7 billion (approximately USD 2.1 billion).

According to Allianz, the broader transaction, including a related distribution agreement, carries a combined consideration of EUR 2.0 billion. The deal also includes a 15-year exclusive distribution partnership with HSBC Bank (Singapore) Limited, through which Allianz will provide protection, health, retirement and wealth solutions to HSBC customers in Singapore.

HSBC's Strategic Realignment

HSBC Life Singapore generated an operating profit of €80 million (approximately SGD 116 million) in 2025 and reported comprehensive equity of €1.2 billion (approximately SGD 1.74 billion) under IFRS 17 as stated in its financial disclosures.

According to Reuters, the sale forms part of HSBC CEO Georges Elhedery's strategy to streamline the group and reduce its exposure to insurance manufacturing while focusing on wealth management and wholesale banking.

HSBC expects the transaction to generate a pre-tax gain of approximately USD 1.8 billion and increase its Common Equity Tier 1 (CET1) ratio by up to 15 basis points, according to the company.

Allianz's Expansion in Singapore

According to Allianz, the acquisition is consistent with its growth strategy of expanding its insurance business in Asia-Pacific and providing customers with broader access to protection, health, retirement and wealth solutions.

Current Status

As of August 2026, the transaction remains subject to regulatory approvals and is expected to close in the first half of 2027, according to Allianz. Until completion, HSBC Life Singapore will continue operating as part of HSBC, while Allianz and HSBC prepare for the transition and implementation of the new long-term distribution partnership.

Allianz agrees to acquire HSBC Life Singapore, alongside a 15-year exclusive distribution partnership with HSBC Singapore.
