Asia Insurance Product Trends: September 2026

2 min read

Insurance product launches across Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia and Hong Kong during September show insurers competing on how easily customers can enrol and how long benefits can last, with simplified underwriting, very long policy terms and condition-specific protection featuring prominently.

Many of the plans launched this month can be taken up without a medical examination, while legacy and bonus features continue to reward long-term policyholders.

Key observations:

Indonesia

Savings products pair modest death cover with accumulating cash value or scheduled maturity payouts, over long policy terms and across a very wide range of premium sizes. The plans are conventional traditional products, including one distributed through bancassurance, with enrolment on a guaranteed issue basis and no medical examination.

Singapore

An indexed universal life plan pairs a guaranteed general account with an index account with floor protection and loyalty crediting from year 11, while a USD participating whole life plan offers policy terms of up to 388 years, terminal bonus access from year 5 and options to split and pass on the policy. Term life protection allows the sum assured to be increased at key life events without underwriting, with milestone cash options and critical illness and disability riders.

Malaysia

Investment-linked plans distributed through bancassurance continue to run to age 100, rewarding persistency through loyalty, booster, vitality and milestone bonuses, with guaranteed issue or simplified underwriting and no medical examination. On the critical illness side, a new launch focuses on neurological conditions, paying staged benefits by severity for Alzheimer’s, severe dementia and Parkinson’s, with a monthly income at the advanced stage.

Hong Kong

Savings products range from participating whole life plans built on non-guaranteed bonuses to guaranteed annuity income, mostly funded by a single premium or a short 2 to 5-year payment term. Newer launches emphasise flexibility and legacy planning, with multi-currency issuance, terminal bonus lock-in, interim owners, policy splitting and customised payouts, and most plans are issued on a guaranteed-acceptance or simplified basis. Medical launches span a high-limit plan with cover across Hong Kong, Macau and the Greater Bay Area, and a short-stay general insurance plan for non-permanent residents new to Hong Kong.

Looking ahead

Across the region, insurers are lowering the barriers to enrolment while extending the horizon over which benefits and legacy value can be delivered.

Key areas of innovation include:

  • simplified and no-medical-examination underwriting;

  • multi-generational legacy planning;

  • condition-specific protection;

  • multi-currency flexibility;

  • loyalty and persistency rewards.

For insurers reviewing their product portfolios, regular benchmarking against regional developments can provide valuable insights into emerging underwriting and legacy expectations, while supporting commercially sustainable product enhancements.
