Swiss Re’s 2025 SONAR report highlights extreme heat as an “invisible peril” causing up to half a million deaths annually—more than floods, earthquakes, and hurricanes combined. The report warns that extended heatwaves are inflicting damage across sectors including energy, telecommunications, agriculture, healthcare, infrastructure, and wildfires. Swiss Re identifies growing liability risks, with companies potentially facing litigation for failing to mitigate heat-related harms. Industries are advised to evolve underwriting models, product structures, and resilience strategies to address increasing frequency and severity of heat events. The report stresses that insurers must integrate extreme heat into their risk horizon and collaborate with public and private stakeholders to build proactive, climate-resilient systems.
